DESIGN

Working with a SME to design relevant, meaningful learning is my favorite role in ID. If I could choose one role, Design would be it, although I would like to stay involved throughout the process. While it is about the look and feel, content is king. Working with SMEs to craft that content with relevant application towards the learning outcome; always, always designing towards the objectives, is paramount. As well, is the integration of technology, and the choices made towards that end. All the bells and whistles amount to silence if in the end, the learning objectives are not achieved. At the same time, failure to engage is also the downfall of poor course design. To that goal, I try to keep the content relative and engaging, following Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction. Organization and easy navigation are also of utmost importance in course design.

This PDF contains a design storyboard document from my Capstone project, Digital Photography Fundamentals; a course I am designing and developing with my local community college. Although I worked with a photography instructor SME in the Analysis phase, I also took the role of SME, having won Sports Photo of the Year and Masters Education at Brooks Institute. I also worked with the design team at Adobe, integrating beta software, Adobe Character Animator. Here is my tutorial on the software, and if you want a lens into the Canvas LMS, email me with your email address to add your name as an Observer.

Gain attention: Typically in the form of a video.

inform about objectives: During the course what will they learn, and at the end, be able to do?

Stimulate recall of prior learning: Review of prerequisites and Pre-test. Also useful for measuring learning against the Post-Test.

Present the content: Content should be chunked, illustrated, relevant, engaging. Provide custom content, suggested readings, group exercises, Discussion Boards…

Provide “learning guidance”: guidance should include scaffolding, yet allow the learner to explore. Send them on the right path and they will discover.

Elicit performance (practice): Engage the learner with tactile activities (do).

Provide feedback: Use more than a correct/incorrect response. Use a conversational tone. Schedule virtual office hours for personalized instruction.

Assess performance: Knowledge checks, illustrated assessments, hot spots, drag and drop, essays… or performance portfolio tests.

Enhance Retention and transfer to job: Level 3 career relevant.
